Gota Work
Gota work is a form of Rajasthani embroidery that involves the stitching of gold or silver coloured ribbons of different widths onto saris using the applique method, to create dazzling designs. These ribbons may either be made of zari threads, or a satin or twill weave. A time consuming process, it involves first tracing the desired design onto the fabric, and colouring it with a chalky paste, before finally sewing the ribbons onto the same.
Gota work features intricate patterns native to the regions where these saris are made. Each pattern and motif has its own name, and figures symbols borrowed from nature. The juxtaposition of different textures- the silvery ribbons against the softness of the base fabric helps create a sari just as beautiful to the touch, as to the sense of sight. This style of embroidery is used extensively in creating saris for weddings or formal functions.
